Glossary of Terms
D/A Digital to Analogue
D/A Digital to Analogue Converter
DAO Stands for Disc At Once Recording, meaning the CD recorder is able to write the information onto the CD in one continuous take, rather than one file at a time.
DAT Stands for either Digital Audio Tape, or in the case of multimedia files, is an extension which designates the MPEG-1 files with additional structure information that a VCD has in its MPEGAV, or Segment  directories.
DCT Stands for Discrete Cosine Transform, which is used for the used for the intra-encoding JPEG and MPEG frames
DDP Stands for Disc Description Protocol, a file standard  identifying and describing CD and DVD data in the glass mastering process.
Demux a.k.a. Multiplexing, means splitting files into element-specific segments to be later rejoined, or muxed, without loss of their original attributes.  this is done when you wish to avoid compressing a file to store it.
DIVX Is a now obsolete file format developed by retail chain Circuit City as a new pay-per-view DVD service. These disposable discs were encrypted so they would become unplayable after 48 hours.
DIVX4 Is the official version for DIVX ;-)
DIVX ;-) Is a hacked version of MPEG-4 which allows for it to save streaming files as to the AVI format.
Dolby Dolby Laboratories noise reduction and sound enhancement process.
DSP Stands for Digital Signal Processor
DTS Stands for Digital Theater System
DVD Stands for Digital Versatile Disc, and is essentially a compact disc containing 7 times the data that a normal audio CD can accommodate. It does so by storing the data on 4 different layers.
DVD-10 New double-sided version of the DVD medium accommodating up to 9.4 Gigabytes of pre-recorded data. 
DVD-14 Double-sided version of the DVD medium accommodating up to 13.2 Gigabytes of pre-recorded data.  This is achieved by having one single layer side, and one double layer side. 
DVD-18 Is the double-sided, dual layer version of DVD, accommodating up to 17.1 Gigabytes of material.
DVD-5 Single-sided, single layer version of the DVD medium accommodating up to 4.7 Gigabytes of pre-recorded data. 
DVD-9 Single-sided, double layer version of the DVD medium accommodating up to 8.5 Gigabytes of pre-recorded data. 
DVD-R Recordable write once DVD format, dual sided, accommodating up to 4.7 Gigabytes of data. 
DVD-RW Recordable rewriteable DVD format, dual sided, accommodating up to 4.7 Gigabytes of data. 
DVD-RAM Recordable rewriteable DVD format, dual sided, superceded by DVD-R,  accommodating a meager 2.9 Gigabytes of data.
