VCD - mpeg1 encoding

First of all, I am not sure if this is the correct group to post this question in, but I am quite desperate. Ok, I want to convert an .avi (DivX) file into an mpeg-1 so I can burn it onto a VCD. I have used TMPGenc and it is a really nice program, but it takes FOREVER! I am wondering if there is ANY way AT ALL to put an avi onto a VCD. If that is not possible, I was also wondering if there was an encoder that could convert my avi to mpeg-1 sometime this century (without also being appx 2 gigs). Thanks in advance for any help you may give me--I'm open to all suggestions and information.
